Several Families bearing the name Antoniello are listed amoung the nobility of Italy. During the thirteenth century,
members of the Antonielli family settled in Aquila, where they were awarded the barony of Forcella. In 1250,
one Antonello Antonelli was lord of the castle of Santa Colombia. Documents indicate that the Antonielli family of
Velletri established itself in that city in 1372. Giancarlo Antonielli was bishop of Ferentino in 1677, while Antonio
was bishop of Urbania and Sant'Angelo in Vado. As mentioned in heraldic documents, the Antonelli family of Asola was admitted
to the nobility of that city in 1511, while the title of count was conferred upon Giampaolo Antonelli by Pope Benedict XIII in 1755.
On September 30, 1772, the Antonelli family was admitted to the Roman nobility in the person of Francesco. The coat of arms described
below was awarded to the Antonielli family of Aquila. Other notable bearers of the name include Leonardo Antonelli (1730-1811),
a cardnal of the Roman Catholic Church, and Giovanni Antonelli (1818-1872), a professor of mathematics and astronamy in Florence.
Giacomo Antonelli, born on April 2, 1806, was created cardinal by Pop Pius IX in 1847 and became premier of the Papal States the
following year. In 1850, he was officially appointed Secretary of the State of the Vatican, a position which he held until his
death in 1876.

The surname Antonielli is patronymic in origin, being derived from the personal name of the father of the original bearer. In this
instance, the source of the name is Antoniello, a variant of Antonio (Anthony), from the Latin "Antonius". The surname thus means
"son or descendant of Antonio". This name is very popular in Italy as the result of the devotion to several saints, particularly
Saint Anthony of Padova (1195-1231).
